With shelter-in-place restrictions and school closures, families have found themselves hunkering down under the same roof like never before. Parents are working double (triple?!) duty and some are even taking on the new role of teacher, while still managing the household and trying to retain some semblance of a career. But exactly what has been the toll on families? We surveyed thousands of Life360 fams across the U.S. to give us a closer look into just how much of an impact the pandemic has had on family life, and show you that many of us are sharing common feelings, experiences, and challenges. Read on for the highlights. Some of them might surprise you!First, we asked families how they feel about COVID-19 and sheltering-in-place…<ul><li>Surprisingly, we found that sheltering-in-place hasn’t been a huge inconvenience for families. 66 percent of families report that sheltering-in-place has been moderately or slightly inconvenient, while only 26 percent reporting it being very or extremely inconvenient. Nine percent shared that it hasn’t been inconvenient at all.</li><li>Also to our surprise, not all families are ready to get back to their regular routines. Once shelter-in-place mandates are lifted, a quarter of families (25 percent) will still be uncomfortable going back to their regular, pre-COVID-19 routines.</li><li>We also found that families are taking shelter-in-place seriously – 99 percent of them in fact. Parents are taking it slightly more seriously than children, with nearly 85 percent reporting they’re taking it extremely or very seriously compared with 73 percent of children.</li></ul>Next, we looked at how family behaviors have shifted since the pandemic began…<ul><li>A heartening finding: families are growing fonder and more connected. Despite reports of disgruntled family life, 33 percent of families state that their parent/child relationships have improved amid the pandemic, compared to only six percent who report it has worsened. The most popular ways that families are connecting during the pandemic are by watching TV and movies (73 percent) and cooking (56 percent), followed by outdoor activities (43 percent), and crafting (34 percent).</li><li>Families are not limiting screen time – even though <q>too much screen time</q> is the largest source of stress. When asked their biggest source of stress, too much screen time came in at No. 1. That said, less than one-third (27 percent) of families are limiting screen time.</li><li>When asked to rank stress factors, families report the top stressor is too much screen time, followed by financial obligations, lack of exercise/sports time, homeschooling, not enough alone time, cooking, working from home with kids, and lastly, running out of toilet paper. </li><li>With schools closed, homeschooling is on the rise — and it hasn’t been easy. Two thirds (66 percent) of families have been homeschooling since sheltering in place, and those being homeschooled find it more challenging than parents, with 73 percent of Gen Z reporting compared to 65 percent of Gen X. Even though the majority of moms and dads report it to be challenging, moms are more than six times more likely to be responsible for the teaching than dads.</li><li>Families are staying social — virtually. The vast majority (87 percent) of families have been socializing virtually with friends and family who don’t live in the same household. And they’re socializing often — with 34 percent socializing daily and 44 percent socializing once or twice per week. The most common platform for virtual socializing is text message (36 percent), followed by FaceTime (22 percent) and Zoom (14 percent). </li></ul>From relationships to homeschooling, screen time to socializing, family life has certainly changed. But despite the many challenges caused by COVID-19, our hope is that families come out of the pandemic even stronger and more connected than before. Stay safe and healthy out there!

Here is what she shared with us:What is your advice on how to best co-parent during these times? Now is a time to be as grown-up as you can. Join together to create a plan for how you will work as a team to ensure the safety of your children. Really work to avoid talking about other <q>big</q> issues at this time; with everybody’s nervous systems on high alert, this is not the time for tackling the big stuff. You can utilize location-sharing technology such as Life360 to help keep your family connected, ensure everyone is following social distancing measures, and reassure you of your child’s safety. What are some of the biggest hurdles co-parents face during this time and how do you recommend approaching them? One of the biggest concerns appears to be about whether or not the other parent is as committed to isolation/shelter in place measures. Another is decision-making, which is a major source of stress for co-parents. If you do need to step in and make decisions, check in with yourself very honestly about <q>intent.</q> Think: is this decision for your child or against your co-parent? Have decisions flow from intentions that are for your child only.What do you do if one parent is taking social distancing less seriously?First, you need to resolve within yourself to neutralize any judgements or anger that this brings up for you. Any conversation that begins with that kind of energy is bound to go sideways. I recommend <a href='http://www.thework.com/' target='_blank' title='Opens in a new tab'>www.thework.com</a> as a simple 4 step process to do this. Then, with a more settled kind of energy have a conversation where you are committed to being curious, listening, and stating your wants clearly and directly.What if the parents share different views on the virus? Do not throw that parent under the bus no matter what. Your children deserve to have two parents and to call the other out is to deny them a feeling of trust with that parent. Instead, respond with open questions such as <q>what do you think of that?</q> and then LISTEN intently, reflecting back to your child what they share with you so your child feels seen and heard. Of course, you can also offer openly <q>would you like to know what I think?</q> And let your child know that it is normal for people to have different opinions.  What do you do when one parent is telling the kids scary things about going outside and getting fatally ill? You will need to work to neutralize this for your child, again without throwing the other parent under the bus. <q>Sometimes when our brains get very worried, we look around and all we can see are the scary things. It doesn’t mean those things are true – it is just what happens when brains are in a scared state.</q> And then highlight the inherent positive in this – <q>And even though we don’t need to be concerned about that kind of stuff, do you know what I really love? I love that your mom/dad loves you SO much that you are the number one thing their worried brain thinks about. That’s a big kind of love and how perfect is that?!</q>How important is flexibility in a time like this? Kids are scared and the recent restrictions and changes in their lives can leave them feeling angry. This makes it more important than ever to have the emotional bond between the two homes be very flexible, so your child always feels <q>with</q> you even if they aren’t physically with you.Tension is through the roof all over the world, which can spark arguments more quickly. How can parents govern themselves accordingly? STOP. That is how we handle this. Now is not the time to take on conflict or actively engage in combative, retaliatory exchanges. You need to be the bigger person, for your children if not for your own sanity. Even if your co-parent hurls an angry text or email your way, you do not need to defend. Defense is the first act of war.How can co-parents adjust to new schedules and find compromises in terms of childcare? Childcare will likely prove to be difficult. If you can find a way to support each other across your two homes and spell off childcare together so each of you has an opportunity to complete your work-from-home obligations or even just to have a break, that would be an ideal world and a unique benefit to you as co-parents across two homes. So work it to your advantage. Beyond this, establish a routine in your new normal. We are creatures of habit as humans, especially children. The report covers Uber&#39;s lost item data from April 2023 to March 2024.The top 10 most-forgotten items list comes as no surprise to frequent ride-hailers. In order, passengers left: clothing, luggage, headphones, wallets, jewelry, phones, cameras, tablets or books, laptops, and vapes.A few of these items—phones, jewelry, wallets, and headphones—were also among the items that Americans reported losing most often, according to <a href='https://www.shaneco.com/theloupe/articles-and-news/stuff-each-state-loses-the-most/' target='_blank' title='Opens in a new tab'>a survey of over 2,000 Americans</a> published by Shane Co. But others, such as clothing, luggage, and cameras, speak more to the nature of ride-hailing.Uber rides are often associated with nights out drinking—a kind of built-in designated driver. In Colorado, a pair of researchers became ride-hail drivers to survey their passengers on the reasons they called a ride and found that <a href='https://web.archive.org/web/20190713110622/https://www.jtlu.org/index.php/jtlu/article/view/1392/1227' target='_blank' title='Opens in a new tab'>nearly half were going out and/or drinking</a>. This is particularly useful for those who might want to use the flashlight on the phone they thought was in their pocket (see the aforementioned top 10 list.)Many ride-hail passengers are also in the midst of travel. According to Uber&#39;s Q1 2024 report filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, about 15% of the company&#39;s rides start from or end at an airport, which can be stressful to navigate and can split travelers&#39; focus, potentially causing them to leave their luggage or other travel necessities behind in the shuffle.
