A family in their living room

We've all experienced the heart-sinking feeling of being unable to find our keys while running late to work or an appointment. Or the sheer panic that sets in when we can't find our wallet.

Most of the time, the items we lose have a way of turning up around the house. However, it's still a stressful event that many of us would like to avoid. Utilizing technology like Tile to track down misplaced items is a quick solution that can help reduce the need to tear the house apart.

Here are several other solutions that can help you find misplaced items quickly.

8 Tips to Find Something You've Lost

Finding a lost item around the home is a matter of staying calm and taking the appropriate steps to locate the missing object. The following eight tips are a great way to systematically track anything from a missing purse to a TV remote.

1. Utilize Bluetooth Location Trackers

One of the most efficient ways to quickly find a lost item's location is through tracking devices like Tile. Most Bluetooth trackers have an extensive range covering your entire house and garage. So, simply logging into the app and pressing the locate button will set off the tracking device's beeping sound.

2. Relax and Take a Few Breaths

It's easy to let panic set in when you first realize you've lost something and don't have something to track it with. However, searching for a misplaced item while stressed can often cause you to overlook the obvious places. The best course of action is often to take a couple of deep breaths and close your eyes. Calmly addressing the problem will help you think as you utilize the remaining tips.

3. Double Check the Usual Spots

Generally, we consistently misplace items in the same locations. The wallet you've lost the last three times always seems to turn up in your car's center console. Likewise, the remote tends to take short vacations in the couch cushions. Before you go into panic mode, look in the obvious spots for the misplaced item.

4. Revisit the Past

If the lost keys or wallet doesn't appear in the typical spots, it might be time to take a step back and think through the last place you had it. Walking through past events in your mind will help jog your memory and give clues about where the missing item might be.

5. Retrace Your Steps

Once you've mentally retraced your steps, it's time to physically visit each spot you last remember having the lost item. Even standing in the spot you were in before can help unlock memories and clues that could lead to discovering the missing item.

6. Clean as You Search

Even though many of us hate to admit it, the things we often lose are simply hiding under a large stack of papers we haven't gotten around to cleaning. If you're certain the last place you had your keys was in the kitchen, try cleaning up the mail holder area or your catch-all drawer to see if they are hiding in plain sight.

7. Ask for Help

Like many other scenarios in life, two heads are usually better than one. Asking a friend or family member to help you search for your lost item can be extremely helpful — even a conversation about where you last saw the belonging can help you think of new spots to search.

8. Quiet the House

If all else fails, try turning off all the sounds in the house and begin searching. Moving couch cushions or sifting through piles of laundry may cause your keys to jingle and indicate their whereabouts.
